So Damn Hot

As part of my very loose half marathon training plan (i.e., getting in one long run a week between 7 – 10 miles) I had a long run on tap for today.

My running buddy Shawn said he was up for going long today so he came out to run with me. Waiting for him to arrive, I enjoyed a plum snowman.

Plum Snowman

Watch them disappear.

two plums one plum no plums

Like magic! I think there was about a 15 second lapse between each of those photos. I’m a plum eating machine!

Shawn arrived and we set out to do 7, 8, 9 or 10, depending on how we felt when we got to various turning points. At the 7/8 mile split we decided to go 8. We were running about an 8:15 pace which was ok but it wasn’t an easy pace to hold a conversation. We slowed down but at about the 4 mile mark I started really feeling the heat and humidity. I wanted a drink NOW. I didn’t bring any water because I usually don’t need it for runs 10 or less.

It was about that time we passed the fire department and Water Authority who were handling a water main break/sewer back up and I kept thinking how amazingly refreshing that water looked. Does that convey how hot and thirsty I was? I was ready to swim in and/or drink sewage.

Some how we slugged out 4 more miles. That last mile was pretty tough but we finished up 8.19 miles in 1:10:28, making our average pace 8:36. Not as fast as I would have liked but considering how damn hot it was today I’ll cut us some slack.

After drinking my weight in water and a shower, I feel human again. I cracked open a young coconut and drank nature’s Gatorade.

Coconut Cow

In a cow glass. Pretty appropriate for a vegetarian wouldn’t you say?

I’ve got overnight oats in the fridge waiting for me when I feel the time is right. I think the time is now.

  1. there is nothing better than coming home from a run and chugging water down. feels so good! maybe one of these days ill give coconut water another try- have you ever had the flavored coconut waters they sell in the “sippy cups”?

    • I’m not sure! I bought Zico once and it came in “juice box” of sorts with a straw. It was very bland compared to the juice straight from the young coconut.

  2. Good Job! Don’t know how your runners do it!

Love the cow glass, perfect for a veggie :D

  3. Haha…lovin’ the cow glass/coconut water combo. Perfect! :D

I used to drink coconut water all the time, but always via the “cheater route.” (aka, in a container)

Do you get a lot of coconut water out of one coconut?? I need to overcome my coconut fears and just crack one open. :D

    • Yes, it’s pretty surprising actually. That glass probably holds 8oz and it filled that glass perfectly. Then you get the young coconut meat too which is the perfect smoothie ingredient.

I’ve had the coconut water in the container, it’s just so expensive! I haven’t figured out the cost of the young coconut vs. the packaged kind yet though.

  4. Yeah, the heat’s killing me too. I usually like to think that I’m pretty heat-resistant when it comes to running, but yesterday I couldn’t handle it and stopped a little early.

That’s awesome that you drink coconut milk/juice/water. Which is it? Supposedly it has lots of great electrolytes. I know recently the commercial form is getting popular, but going right to the source is always best!

    • From a young coconut, it’s coconut water. As the coconut matures it turns to milk. The young coconut is usually white when you see in the store (because it’s been shaved) and the mature coconut is brown. It’s good stuff, I highly recommend!

  5. It is so hott here in Michigan too! i’m glad you were careful!

  6. Wow. That’s a lot of water in a coconut! I’ll have to give it a try… Love the cow glass… ;)

Running in the heat is tough. I went hiking the other day a bit later than I should have, and we decided on a long, VERY steep trail. By the time we made it to the top, with little shade, it was almost noon. It was tough…

    Happy Sunday! :)

  7. P.S.: Oh, and I need water… I have thought many times that I’d drink anything, including sewer water… ;)

  8. Way to go on the run – feeling you on the heat. My run was pretty gross yesterday! I wish I could run that fast for 8 miles – I don’t know if I have it in me, you speed demon!
Your young coconuts look sooo refreshing!

  9. U don’t need water for 10 miles? That is crazy. I wish I could run that much without water ;)

  10. I have never seen a plum in that color…. I thought they were purple?

Water tastes soooo much better after a long run , and I can never get enough!

  11. i also think the time is now.

work it on that run girl…woowoo!

  12. I want a plum snowman!!

It’s ok that there’s a cow on your water glass. She loves you.
