Lettuce Go for a Bike Ride

Having gotten my run in last night, I was just plum in the mood to go for a bike ride this morning.

Pre Ride Plum

I didn’t want to go too far or too long because I had plans to hit up the Farmer’s Market at the end.

I rode around town and just shy of 40 minutes rolled into the Farmer’s Market about a mile and a half from home. It’s held in the parking lot of church and I always pay careful attention to where I park lest I’m struck dead by lightening.

Thou Shall Not Park Here

I soaked in the beautiful sites.

I enjoyed a little donut sample… a donut PEACH that is!

Donut Peach Sample

I filled my back pack with tomatoes, cukes, blueberries, peaches, plums, a green pepper and topped it all off with three heads of romaine lettuce.

Lettuce man said “That’ll be some salad!”

Yeah. A salad I’m going to DRINK!

Lettuce Put on Our Back Pack

Let’s roll. Or, better yet, lettuce roll.

Lettuce Ride

I got home and unpacked my loot and promptly sunk my teeth into this yellow guy.

And then I ate 3 more. Plums are little YO!

  8. Wow…that’s so cool! Now do you find the prices cheaper at the Farmer’s Market versus the store? I’m asking because the prices at all of our local farms are way more expensive then the grocery stores which I would have thought would be the opposite. Maybe farms are different than Farmer’s Markets? Just wondering.

    • Jennifer, Never done this reply thing so I’m sorry if its not the right thing to do…. Anyway, We just started going to the farmers markets this year And I had to shop around to find one I really love.

In most cases I find it to be A LOT cheaper, Like today I just wanted 2 tomatoes and not a pound worth, I got them for 30cents. And 4 Cucumbers for a $1 and melons for $2….but last week one guy was selling peaches for $7 and blueberries for $6. It was high for me, but soo worth it for local, organic, and fresh vs. store. And the savings on some veggies, make it worth it to pay more for others.

its probably different every where, but worth checking several, if you have that option.

And to the Bike Rider with the lettuce on your back.. how did you NOT squash the tomatoes.. I was laughing so hard when I saw that picture. That is soooo something I would do if the market was closer, and my Husband would laugh too hard.

      • hehe vegmom you beat me to a response to Jennifer’s question!

I paid $1 for 2 cukes today. I saw at the grocery store later they were .75 a piece.

the tomatoes were toward the top of the bag and arrived home unharmed! 😀

    • At a Farmers Market, yes the prices are cheaper or at the very least the same as the grocery store. But at a Farmers Market there is competition with the other farms that are there selling there produce so I think that keeps the prices a little lower. I’d imagine at a farm without competition they could jack up their prices a bit. Either way, I like supporting the local farms when the local fruits and veggies are in season, so I would my tolerance to pay a little more would be higher.

      • Thanks vegmom and Alison. 🙂

I think you are right about going to the farm itself. I’m going to try the farmer’s market because there is one not to far from us and see their prices. I think it’s worth paying a little more to buy locally but the farms are just insanely high.

I’ll let you know what I find.
